Back glass and hatches
Liftgate Glass Broken on an SUV or Hatchback
The glass in a liftgate is the back window, but it hangs on a door that swings open, and that changes what to do. Here is how to handle it, and how we replace it.
Replace it, and keep the liftgate closed and the opening covered until we do.
On an SUV, wagon or hatchback, the back window is built into the liftgate. It is the same kind of glass as a sedan’s back window, but it lives on a moving door. That adds a few things a trunk-lid sedan does not have: gas struts that hold the gate up, a latch that has to close cleanly, and, on many vehicles, a rear wiper that mounts through the glass. A break in the glass leaves the gate light and open to the weather, but the structure around it is usually intact.
Start by clearing the glass. Tempered back glass breaks into small pebbles, and they pile up on the cargo floor, in the seat folds and in the channel along the bottom of the gate. Open the gate carefully, since the opening is now a gap, and let the pieces fall out instead of pushing them in. Wear gloves and shoes. Vacuum the cargo area and check under the cargo cover and in the spare tire well. Pebbles hide there for months.
Here is the rule that matters most. Keep the liftgate and the rear window closed while you drive. An SUV or wagon is shaped so that air swirls and pulls into the low-pressure area behind it, and that can draw exhaust into the cabin through an open or missing back window. The CDC has documented this for station wagons, and makers say in their owner manuals to keep liftgates and rear windows closed while driving. With the glass gone, the opening is no longer closed, so keep trips short, cover it, and open your front windows a little to keep air moving through the cabin.
Cover the opening from the outside with heavy plastic sheeting and strong tape, running the tape along the frame instead of the painted skin, and keep the tape off the rubber seal if you can. Do not slam the gate. A broken pane means the frame carries more flex than it should. If something else was damaged, like the rear wiper arm, the struts or the latch, those are separate parts and we cannot replace them. Our work is the glass, so tell us what you see when you text the photo.
We come to your home or office and replace the glass. We need your VIN, because one vehicle can have more than one version of the liftgate glass, depending on the defroster grid, wiper opening, antenna lines and any factory shading. We install OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass, and we reconnect the rear defroster connections, which a customer review confirms. The workmanship is warranted for the life of the vehicle.
Liftgate glass at a glance
- Keep the liftgate and rear window closed while driving, as vehicle manuals advise
- Let the glass fall out of the frame, do not push it into the cabin
- Check the cargo floor, seat folds and spare tire well for pebbles
- Cover the opening from outside with heavy plastic and strong tape
- We replace the glass, not the struts, wiper or latch
The price depends on your vehicle and the features in the glass, so we quote from your VIN. The estimate is free. A broken liftgate window is usually a comprehensive claim, and your deductible applies. We are a preferred vendor for all major insurance companies and can file for you.
Questions Drivers Ask
Why does the glass break into pebbles?
Back glass is tempered, which makes it strong against a bump and makes it crumble into small blunt pieces when it fails. That is safer than long shards, but it makes a mess.
Can I drive with the liftgate window gone?
Only a short, careful trip. Cover the opening, keep the gate latched and open your front windows slightly so air moves through the cabin and exhaust is not pulled in from behind.
Do you fix the struts or the rear wiper?
No. We replace the glass. If a strut, latch or wiper is damaged, tell us when you text a photo so we can see what is going on.
Will the rear defroster work again?
If your vehicle has one, the new glass comes with its own grid and we reconnect the connections. A customer review confirms we do this on back glass jobs.
