The fix, and driving on
How Long Does a Windshield Replacement Take?
The install is faster than most people expect. What catches drivers off guard is the wait after it, the safe drive-away time while the adhesive cures.
Plan for the car to sit about one to two hours total: roughly an hour to install, plus about an hour of cure time before you drive.
If what you have is a repairable chip, this is quick. A chip repair runs about 20 to 30 minutes start to finish. We clean out the break, inject resin, cure it, and you are done. There is no long wait afterward, because we are not disturbing the seal that holds the glass in, so you can drive the moment we finish. That is what makes catching a chip early the easy call.
A full replacement is more involved, but still not an all-day job. The actual install runs about an hour. We pull the old windshield, clean the pinch weld (the metal frame the glass sits on), lay down a fresh bead of urethane adhesive, and set the new glass. Doing it right means not rushing that prep, because a windshield bonded to a clean, properly primed frame is a windshield that holds when it matters.
Here is the part people do not plan for: safe drive-away time. Once the new glass is set, the urethane needs time to cure before the windshield can do its structural job. With the modern fast-cure adhesives we use, that is usually about an hour at a minimum, but it is not a fixed number. Cold or damp weather slows the cure, so a chilly, wet morning can run longer than a warm, dry afternoon. Add it all up and you should plan for the car to sit somewhere between one and two hours from the time we start to the time you drive.
Because we come to you, none of that time is spent sitting in a shop waiting room. We do the whole thing in your driveway or your office parking lot while you work, take a call, or make lunch. The car just needs to stay put through the install and the cure. And we do not leave you guessing: before we pack up, we give you your exact drive-away time for that day and that weather, so you know the minute it is safe to get back on the road.
A rough timeline to plan around
- Chip repair: about 20 to 30 minutes, then drive right away
- Replacement install: about an hour
- Safe drive-away time: about an hour minimum, longer in cold or damp weather
- A full replacement, start to drive-away: plan for one to two hours
Cost is separate from time, but here is the short version. A chip repair is a flat $85, which covers up to three chips on one windshield and includes us coming to you. A replacement is priced from your VIN, because the glass, sensors, and options change the part, so there is no single flat price. We quote the replacement before we start, so you know both the number and the timeline before we touch the car.
Questions Drivers Ask
Can I drive right after a chip repair?
Yes. A repair does not disturb the seal that holds your windshield in, so there is no cure wait. Once we finish, about 20 to 30 minutes in, you are good to drive.
Why do I have to wait to drive after a replacement?
Because the urethane that bonds the new glass to the frame has to cure enough to hold it in a crash. Right after the install the glass looks set, but the adhesive underneath is still curing. Drive too soon and the windshield cannot do its structural job. The wait is a safety step, not a formality.
Does cold weather make the wait longer?
It can. Urethane cures with the help of moisture and temperature, so a warm, humid afternoon cures faster than a cold, dry morning. That is why we give you your drive-away time based on the actual conditions that day instead of a one-size number.
Do I need to be there the whole time?
The car needs to stay parked through the install and the cure, but you do not have to stand there watching. Most customers go back to work or into the house while we handle it in the driveway. We tell you your drive-away time before we leave.
