GEICO Glass Claim in Georgia: Chip or Crack?

GEICO says it may waive the deductible on a repairable chip. Here is how to file a GEICO windshield claim in Georgia, and why acting on a chip early matters.

If you drive for GEICO, the most useful thing to know is also the simplest: a chip and a crack are treated differently. GEICO’s own pages say it may waive your deductible when glass can be repaired, and that your deductible generally applies when glass has to be replaced. That one difference can change what you pay, so the order of your decisions matters.

We are Executive Auto Glass, a mobile auto glass company in Cumming, Georgia. We have worked on windshields since 2009. This post is for GEICO policyholders around Forsyth County and the north Atlanta suburbs who want to know how a glass claim works. We are not GEICO, and we cannot read your policy for you. Everything GEICO-specific below comes from GEICO’s own pages, linked as we go.

The GEICO rule that favors acting early on chips

GEICO’s glass claims guide says broken glass is generally handled under comprehensive physical damage coverage, which is usually subject to a deductible. It also says that small chips or cracks, smaller than a dollar bill, may be repairable. And then the line that matters: “If you have the appropriate coverage, GEICO will waive your deductible when you have your glass repaired.”

GEICO’s Claims Center page for glass says it a little differently. If you have comprehensive coverage and the damage is repairable, GEICO may waive the deductible, depending on your state. If the glass needs to be replaced, your deductible generally applies.

Read those two together and the lesson is clear. A chip is cheap and easy to treat while it is a chip. If you wait, it can grow into a crack, and a crack that runs across the glass means replacement. GEICO’s own wording suggests the deductible treatment is different on each side of that line.

We cannot promise that a waiver applies to you. “May” and “depending on your state” are GEICO’s words, not ours. Your policy and your coverage decide. But even without a waiver, repair is the easier path. Our chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on the same windshield, mobile service included. More than 3 chips, and we usually recommend replacement.

How to start a GEICO glass claim

GEICO tells drivers to report glass damage as soon as possible, online, and says you can schedule the repair there too. The Claims Center lists a “Report Glass Damage” link that leads to GEICO’s glass claim form. GEICO adds that starting a glass claim helps determine whether the damage can be repaired or has to be replaced.

Here is the order we suggest:

  1. Photograph the damage. Take one shot from inside the car and one from outside. Lay a dollar bill near the damage if you can, since that is the size GEICO uses.
  2. Check your policy. Look for comprehensive coverage and your deductible. If you cannot find it, open your GEICO account and look at your policy documents.
  3. Report the glass damage with GEICO. Use the Report Glass Damage option in the GEICO Claims Center.
  4. Tell GEICO who you want to do the work. Give them our number if you choose us. We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies.
  5. Send us a photo and your claim number. We confirm the vehicle details and the glass you need, and we quote from your VIN.
  6. Book a visit. We come to your home or workplace. We are fully mobile, with no shop and no walk-in.
  7. Keep the paperwork. Save the claim number, the invoice, and any message from GEICO.

If you would rather skip the forms, we can file the claim for you. We need your insurance information and the details of the damage. Either way works.

Can you choose your own shop with GEICO?

We looked for a clear answer on GEICO’s own pages and did not find one. The glass guide and the Claims Center page we read cover how to report damage and how the deductible works. They do not spell out how GEICO handles shop choice, and we will not guess for them.

So here is the honest advice. When you report the damage, ask the GEICO representative or the online form how they handle your choice of shop. Then ask two plain questions:

  • “If I use Executive Auto Glass, will GEICO still handle the claim?”
  • “What would I pay, and what would GEICO pay?”

Georgia’s consumer protection office is a good reminder that insurers do not all work the same way. Its page on body shops says some companies suggest a particular shop and others require several estimates. That page covers collision repair, not glass, but the point carries over. The Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance says the same thing in its auto claim tips: know your company’s policy on qualified repair shops.

We will not tell you that GEICO recommends us, or that we are in their network. We can say we are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies, and that is all we claim. If GEICO says something that surprises you, call us. We would rather you hear the plain answer before the work starts.

What a replacement claim looks like

When the damage is too big to fill, you are in replacement territory. Per GEICO’s Claims Center, your deductible generally applies, so the amount depends on your own policy.

This is where a quote helps you decide. Replacement pricing depends on your vehicle. We need the VIN, because one vehicle can have up to about 15 windshield versions by option package. Option packages change which glass fits. Give us the VIN and we give you a free estimate.

Then compare two numbers: the estimate and your deductible. If your deductible is lower, filing may make sense. If it is higher, filing does not help you, and paying us directly is the better choice. We will say so. We would rather tell you that than run a claim that costs you more later.

We install OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) and aftermarket glass, so you can choose. If one type is not available, we have a fallback. What GEICO pays for is a question to ask GEICO. Our general page on whether insurance covers a windshield walks through the basics, and our windshield replacement page shows what we do.

If your car has a camera behind the glass, tell us. We do not do ADAS camera calibration. After a replacement on a car that needs it, we refer the calibration to the dealer. Manufacturers recommend dealer calibration, and they require a controlled indoor space that a mobile job cannot provide.

If the glass is already out

GEICO’s guide has a practical tip for a broken piece of glass, not a chip. If a whole piece of glass is out, protect the inside of the car by parking in a garage if you can, or by covering the opening with tape and plastic.

That matters more than people think. A back glass that shattered in an Alpharetta parking lot, or a door glass smashed in a Suwanee driveway, leaves the cabin open to rain, pollen and thieves. Cover it, report it, and send us a photo.

We do door glass, quarter glass and back glass as well as windshields. For door glass, see door glass replacement. A customer review confirms we reconnect rear defroster connections on back glass jobs. Each one gets a free estimate based on your vehicle.

Why acting early pays off for Cumming drivers

Forsyth County has a lot of construction, a lot of gravel, and a lot of drivers on GA-400 every morning. Rock chips are common here. Georgia also swings from warm afternoons to cold nights in winter, and a chip can spread when the glass flexes with the temperature.

That is why we keep telling GEICO customers the same thing: fix a chip while it is a chip. If GEICO may waive the deductible for a repairable chip, and our flat $85 is easy to plan for, waiting is the costly option.

A few extra points GEICO customers ask about:

  • Do I have to file? No. You can pay for a chip repair yourself and skip the claim.
  • Will it raise my rates? We cannot speak for how GEICO prices a renewal. Ask GEICO before you file if that worries you.
  • What does the repair do? It fills the chip with resin to stop it from spreading. It will not make the damage vanish, and it does not work on every chip.
  • What if it already spread? Then you are probably looking at replacement, and the deductible question comes back.
