Cracked Windshield for Uber and Lyft Drivers: What to Know
A chip or crack on a rideshare car can mean a failed inspection or a rough review. Here is what Uber and Lyft say, and how drivers can handle the glass.
If you drive for Uber or Lyft, your car is your office. A rock chip on GA-400 is not just a nuisance. It can be a failed vehicle inspection, a lower rating from a passenger who is nervous about the crack, or a reason to park the car when you would rather be driving.
The tricky part is that neither company publishes a rule that says “a crack longer than this is not allowed.” What they do publish is more general. This post goes through what is actually written down, what is not, and a sensible way to handle the glass so your car stays on the road.
What Uber says about vehicle condition
Uber’s help page on vehicle requirements lists minimum standards for cars. The condition rule reads: “No cosmetic damage, missing pieces, commercial branding, or taxi paint jobs are allowed.” It also says the vehicle cannot be salvaged, reconstructed or rebuilt.
Notice what that page does not say. It does not mention windshields or cracks. So you cannot tell from the page alone whether a chip counts as “cosmetic damage.” A chip that sits in your line of sight is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one, and a car with that kind of damage is a poor bet for passing a mechanic’s look.
Uber also says drivers need a vehicle inspection completed by a licensed mechanic before approval, and that Uber does not cover repairs or maintenance needed to pass an inspection. Its inspection page does not say what the mechanic checks. If you have a cracked windshield and an inspection is coming up, ask the mechanic before you pay for the visit.
What Lyft says
Lyft’s driver requirements page covers basics such as four doors and at least five seatbelts, and says other vehicle requirements vary with your region. It points drivers to their own state and city pages. It does not mention windshield damage either.
The broader rule is in Lyft’s terms of service. In the section on driver representations, a driver states that the vehicle “is in good operating condition and meets the industry safety standards.” A driver also states that it meets applicable state and local requirements.
So the written rule is general in both cases: keep the car in good shape. Cars.com, in its guide to Uber and Lyft car requirements, says both companies expect a car in “good condition” with no cosmetic damage, and that inspection points may include a cracked windshield. It also notes the rules differ by state and city. If you want a real answer for your car, the safest route is to ask Uber or Lyft support in the driver app, and keep the reply.

Why the glass matters beyond the rulebook
Even if a chip would pass an inspection, it is still a risk you carry every shift. A small chip can spread with heat, bumps and temperature swings. A rideshare car spends a lot of hours on the road and in the sun, and it goes from a hot parking lot to a cold air conditioner over and over. Our post on why windshields crack explains how that stress turns a small chip into a long crack.
There is the passenger side, too. People notice a cracked windshield when they get in, and some people do not like it. It is hard to prove a rating dropped for that reason, so we will not claim it did. But a clean windshield is one less thing for a rider to think about.
And there is the law. A crack that blocks your view is a problem for any driver in Georgia, rideshare or not. Our page on whether it is safe and legal to drive with a cracked windshield in Georgia covers what we know about that.
Repair or replace: what the size tells you
Most rideshare drivers ask the same thing first: is it a chip I can repair, or does the whole windshield need to go? The answer comes down to size, type and location.
A small chip, like a bullseye or a short star break, can often be filled with resin. A chip repair with us is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on the same windshield, with mobile service included. If you have more than 3 chips, we usually recommend replacement. Our page on rock chips, repair or replace shows what to look for.
A crack is a different story. A crack longer than about three inches has traveled too far to hold a repair, and a crack that touches the edge of the glass is almost always a replacement. A damage point in the driver’s line of sight is often a replacement as well, because even a good repair can leave a faint mark where your eyes go. See long cracks and damage in your line of sight for more.
If you cannot tell, send us a photo. We will tell you which one it looks like. A photo is not a perfect read, and we will say so if we need to see it in person.
Paying for it, and what to ask your insurer
A rideshare driver may have more than one insurance policy in the picture: your personal auto policy and whatever coverage applies while you are on the app. We cannot tell you how yours works, and we will not guess. What we can say is that many policies cover glass under comprehensive coverage, and that your deductible and coverage terms are in your own policy.
Before you file, call your insurer or open its app and ask three things. Does my policy cover glass? Does being on the rideshare app change that? What is my deductible? Our page on whether insurance covers a windshield repair or replacement has the background.
We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies. You can give your insurer our number when you file, or we can file the claim for you if you give us the information. Most people file in their insurer’s app. If you decide to pay out of pocket, the replacement price depends on the vehicle, and we need the VIN to give you a real number. See our pricing page for how we price.
Keep the car earning: practical tips
Here are the things we would do if we drove for a living.
- Look at the glass in daylight. Walk around the car with a flashlight in the evening too. Chips are easy to miss until a lamp or the sun hits them.
- Take a photo as soon as you see damage. Put a coin next to it for scale. A dated photo helps with insurance and with any conversation with the app.
- Do not wait on a chip. Heat from a parked car and a blast of cold air from the air conditioner are hard on glass. Get it looked at before it grows.
- Read your local requirements page before an inspection. Uber says its vehicle requirements page carries local inspection forms, so look at yours before you pay for a visit.
- Keep your receipts. Whether or not an insurer pays, you will want a record of what was done and when.
Where you park matters, too. If you live in Cumming, Suwanee, Alpharetta or Johns Creek, we can come to your driveway. If you park at a workplace between rides, tell us where the car will be and we can talk about a spot that works. We come to your home or work.
Windshield, door glass and back glass
The windshield is the glass people talk about, but the others count, too. A passenger who sits behind a cracked side window may have the same worry as one in front. We handle door glass and back glass, plus quarter glass, with a free estimate by vehicle. On back glass jobs, a customer review confirms we reconnect rear defroster connections.
If you run a small fleet of cars for drivers, tell us. We do fleet work as well as individual cars, trucks, SUVs and vans.
A word on staying earning while the glass is handled
Time off the road is money lost, and every driver knows the math. That is the main reason mobile service suits rideshare drivers. You do not need to arrange a ride or borrow a car while yours sits at a shop. Tell us where the car will be parked, and we come to you. We reply within an hour during business hours, so you can ask a question between rides and plan around your own schedule. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday is by appointment.
What we would do next
Here is a simple order of steps if you drive for Uber or Lyft and see damage.
- Take a clear photo of the damage and the whole windshield.
- Check your app and your city page for vehicle rules, and ask support if you are unsure.
- Send us the photo and your VIN. We will tell you whether it looks like a repair or a replacement.
- Check your insurance policy before you decide how to pay.
- Pick a place for the car where we can reach it.
Your car is how you earn. A chip you can repair for a flat $85 is easier to deal with than a crack that grows into a replacement. See our windshield repair and windshield replacement pages for how each one works, or read about our workmanship warranty before you book.
