Windshield Replacement at Work: What We Need From You

Yes, we can replace your windshield in the work parking lot. Here is what to arrange with your employer, what we need from you, and what to expect on site.

Most people put off a windshield replacement because of one thing: the day it takes to deal with it. Drop the car at a shop, find a ride, borrow a car, miss a meeting. So the crack gets a little longer every week, and the plan stays “sometime soon.”

We have no shop. We are fully mobile, and we come to your home or your workplace. That means the car can stay where it is parked at work, and you stay at your desk. Here is how to set that up so it goes smoothly, and what we need from you.

Why working from the parking lot is normal for us

Mobile glass work is the only kind we do. Our technicians bring what they need to the car, and they work where it sits. It is not a special favor to do it at your office, a warehouse lot or a medical building. It is how we operate.

That said, a parking lot is not a shop, and a few things matter. The adhesive that holds the windshield is a urethane, and most modern ones cure with moisture from the air. Auto Glass Dixie, a glass shop, explains that humidity and cold change how the adhesive cures, and that technicians set the safe drive-away time from humidity, temperature and the adhesive type. Pilkington, a glass maker, says the same: safe drive-away time varies by product and by installation conditions, and it advises choosing a product made for your climate.

For you, the takeaway is simple. Weather is part of the plan. Rain, a cold snap or a very hot afternoon can change how the job is set up. We talk it through with you instead of guessing. Our page on safe drive-away time explains what that term means.

What to arrange with your employer or property manager

Before you book, make sure you are allowed to have work done on the car on the property. Most employers say yes, but some buildings have rules.

Ask these questions, and ask whoever handles the lot or the building:

  • Is it okay for a vendor to work on my car in the lot?
  • Is there a spot that is flat, open and out of the main traffic lanes?
  • Does the building need a certificate of insurance, a visitor pass or a gate code?
  • Is there anything the building needs from us, like a name or a license plate for the gate?

If a vendor form or a gate code is needed, tell us when you book. We would rather hear about it before we pull in. If the building wants paperwork we do not have, send us what they ask for and we will see what we can do.

Also tell your supervisor you will step out at some point to meet the technician. You do not have to take the day. Most people meet us at the car, hand over the keys, answer a question or two, and go back inside.

Pick the right spot

A good spot makes the job easier. Here is what helps.

A flat surface. A sloped lot makes it harder to set the glass. A level spot is best.

Room around the car. The technician needs space to open doors, walk around the vehicle and work at the front and back. A car boxed in by two others is hard to work around. If you can park in an end space or move the car to a roomier area, it helps.

Open air or a covered spot. Shade can help on a hot Georgia afternoon, and cover helps in the rain. A covered spot with enough space is a good choice, but one squeezed between columns is not. If you only have a garage, see the next section.

Not under a tree if you can help it. Spring pollen in Georgia coats everything, and a tree over the car adds sap and droppings on top. A clear spot is easier to work around.

Not at the edge of a lane where cars fly by. Choose a quieter part of the lot.

If you cannot decide, text us a photo of where the car usually sits. We will tell you what looks workable.

What to do about a parking garage

Plenty of offices around Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody have parking decks. Some of them work fine, and some do not.

Tell us it is a garage when you book. Low ceilings, tight turns and narrow bays can make it hard to work around a car. An open surface spot is often easier. Ask if there is a surface lot or a roof level you can use. If a deck is your only option, send us a photo of the level and the spot, plus any height limit on the sign at the entrance. We will tell you what we think.

What we need from you

These are the things that make the appointment run well.

  • Your VIN. A windshield replacement needs it, because one vehicle can have up to about 15 windshield versions depending on its option package. Send it with a photo of the damage when you ask for a quote. The estimate is free.
  • The exact location. Give us the address, the building name, the lot or level, and a phone number for someone who can meet us if you are in a meeting.
  • A person with the keys. You or a trusted coworker should be able to hand over the keys and answer questions.
  • Your insurance information, if you are filing a claim. We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies. You can give your insurer our number when you file, or we can file the claim for you if you give us the information. Most people file in their insurer’s app. Our page on insurance and windshields has the background.
  • A way to pay. We take cash, check, credit or debit, Venmo, Zelle and Cash App.
  • A clear car. Take your phone mount, toll tag, parking permit, dash cam or any hanging item off the windshield and dashboard before we arrive. Clear the dash and front seats too, so the technician can work.

If your car has a camera behind the windshield, tell us. Many newer vehicles do. An advisory from IIHS, reprinted by Safelite, says most manufacturers recommend recalibrating those sensors after a windshield replacement. We do not do calibration. If your vehicle needs it, we refer it to the dealer. Our page on camera recalibration explains more, and it helps to know before you book so you can plan a dealer visit.

What the visit looks like

We will not hand you a clock time for the work, because it depends on the vehicle, the weather and the conditions. Here is what you can count on.

The technician checks in with you or the person you named, looks at the damage and confirms the vehicle and the glass. This is when the VIN and the photo pay off. Then the old windshield comes out and the new one goes in with adhesive. Our technicians are graduates of the Equalizer Auto Glass Academy and are DuPont adhesive certified.

Before the car is released, the technician explains the safe drive-away guidance for your car and conditions. That guidance depends on the adhesive, the temperature and the humidity, so listen and ask questions. Auto Glass Dixie notes that technicians give customers specific instructions before releasing the vehicle, and we do the same.

Take a minute to walk around the car with the technician. If something does not look right, say so then.

Weather, cars and other things that come up

A few more points that people ask us.

What if it rains? Moisture and temperature both matter to the adhesive, as the sources above explain. If rain is forecast, ask us what we recommend. Moving to a covered spot may help, and we may talk about timing.

What if there is a crack that spreads before we get there? Skip the car wash and do not blast the defroster at the damage. See our page on what to do after a chip. If the crack reaches the edge, tell us.

What if the car is a fleet vehicle? We do fleet and dealership work, along with cars, trucks, SUVs and vans. Tell us how many vehicles you have, and we can talk about a plan. A shared lot may make it easy to handle more than one.

What if I need other glass? We also replace door glass, quarter glass and back glass, with a free estimate by vehicle. On back glass jobs, a customer review confirms we reconnect rear defroster connections.

What does it cost? The price depends on your vehicle and we need the VIN. See our pricing page. If it is just a chip, a flat $85 covers up to 3 chips on the same windshield, mobile service included.

  1. Text us the VIN and a photo of the damage for a free quote.
  2. Ask your employer or building about vendor rules and a good spot.
  3. Tell us the address, the lot or level, and who will meet us.
