It just broke: what to do
My Car Window Shattered: What Do I Do First?
You walked out and the glass is in pieces, or it let go while you were driving. Take a breath. Here is what to do first, in order, and what to leave alone.
A shattered side or back window cannot be repaired. It gets replaced, and the first job is making the car safe to be around.
Start with the glass itself. Side and back windows on most cars are tempered glass, which is heat-treated so that when it fails it breaks into thousands of small pieces instead of long sharp shards. That is a safety feature, but it means those pieces are everywhere: on the seat, in the carpet, in the door, and sometimes in your clothes. Do not sweep it with your bare hand and do not climb in and sit down. Shoes on, gloves if you have them, and stand outside the car while you look.
Next, figure out how it broke, because that changes what you do after. If a rock or a ball hit it, or the glass just let go on its own, you mostly have a cleanup and a replacement. If the window was smashed from outside and something is missing, you have a break-in, and the order of things changes: photos first, then a police report, then cleanup. We wrote a separate page for that, because it has its own steps.
Then deal with the opening. Rain, pollen and road noise all come in through a missing window, and pollen season in north Georgia is not gentle with an open car. Cover the hole with heavy plastic and tape to the door frame, and keep tape off the paint where you can. We cover how in another page. If the window broke while you were driving, pull over somewhere safe before you worry about any of this, and keep an eye on the plastic if you do drive, because it flaps hard at highway speed.
Do not run the window switch. If the glass broke while the window was down, or most of the pane is still in the door, pieces are sitting down inside the door and in the tracks. Running the motor can grind them into the channels and scratch whatever glass goes in next. Leave the window where it is and leave the door glass cleanup to the replacement.
When you are ready, text us a photo of the damage and your vehicle info, ideally the VIN. The VIN is the long number on the dash by the windshield corner and on the sticker inside the driver door edge. It tells us exactly which glass your vehicle uses, which is how we give you a free estimate that is for your car and not a guess. We are fully mobile, so we come to your home or workplace. There is no shop to drive to, which matters when your car has a hole in it.
First steps, in order
- Get to a safe spot and keep skin, shoes and pets away from the loose glass
- Take photos of the damage before you move anything, especially if it was a break-in
- Do not run the window switch if glass is in the door
- Cover the opening with plastic and tape, and keep tape off the paint where you can
- Text us a photo and your VIN for a free estimate
We give a free estimate for door, quarter and back glass, and the price depends on your vehicle, which is why we ask for the VIN. We do not quote a flat number for side glass because a number that ignores your vehicle is not worth much. If insurance is covering it, we are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies, and we tell you your out-of-pocket amount before any work starts.
Questions Drivers Ask
Can a shattered car window be repaired?
No. Tempered glass cannot be patched or filled the way a windshield chip can. Once it shatters, the only fix is a new piece of glass. Chip repair is only for windshields.
Should I vacuum the glass out myself?
You can take the loose pieces off the seats and floor with a vacuum, wearing shoes and gloves. Do not reach into the door cavity or run the window. The glass inside the door gets cleared out as part of a proper replacement.
Do I need the VIN to get a quote?
It helps a lot, because one model can use different glass by trim and options. If you cannot find it, text a photo of the damage and tell us the year, make and model, and we will work from there.
Will my insurance cover a shattered window?
Many comprehensive policies cover glass, with your deductible applying. We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies, so you can give your insurer our number when you file, or we can file the claim for you if you give us the details.
