It just broke: what to do
Car Broken Into and Window Smashed: What Now?
Finding your car broken into is a lousy start to any day. The order you do things in matters, because a few steps are hard to undo once the glass is cleaned up.
Do the photos and the police report before you clean anything. The glass gets replaced after.
First, if the person who did it could still be nearby, or you feel unsafe, leave and call 911. Otherwise, stay calm and do not touch anything yet. The car is evidence and so is the glass pattern. Walk around it and take photos from every side, close up and wide: the broken window, the glass on the seats and ground, the door lock, the glove box and anything pried open. Photos taken before cleanup are what your insurer and the police will want.
Next, make a list of what is missing, with whatever detail you have: item, rough value, and where it was. Then file a police report. Many insurers ask for one before they process a break-in claim, and the report number is usually what they need to open the claim, so ask for it before you leave. Even if nothing was taken, damage alone is reason enough to report it.
Insurance depends on what was damaged. The car itself, including a smashed window, generally falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, subject to your deductible. Collision and liability do not apply to a break-in. Things stolen from inside the car, like a laptop or a bag, usually fall under renters or homeowners insurance rather than your auto policy. Check your own policy, because the terms decide it. If your deductible is higher than the glass job, filing for the window may not help you, and we will say so rather than push a claim.
We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies. You can give your insurer our number when you file, which most people do through their insurer's app, or you can give us the claim information and we file the claim for you.
Now the glass. A smashed side window leaves pieces on the seats, in the carpet, in the seat tracks and down inside the door. Once you have your photos and report, cover the opening so rain and pollen stay out, and keep tape off the paint where you can. Then text us a photo and your VIN for a free estimate. We replace the window and we come to you, so you do not have to drive a car with a missing window to a shop. One honest limit: if the thief also damaged a door lock, the ignition or a panel, that is a different job and not one we do. We handle the glass.
Last, think about whether the car was a target. Items in view invite a second visit. Take bags, chargers and cables inside, and park where there is light if you can.
The order that works
- Photos of everything before you touch or clean anything
- List what is missing, then file the police report and get the number
- Tell your insurer about the car damage and your own policy about stolen items
- Cover the opening so weather stays out
- Text us a photo and VIN to get the window replaced
The window itself is a free estimate by vehicle, and we need the VIN to price it. Whether you pay anything out of pocket depends on your comprehensive deductible. If your deductible is more than the glass job, you are better off paying us directly, and we say that up front.
Questions Drivers Ask
Do I really need a police report for a smashed window?
Many insurers expect one before they pay a break-in claim, and it also puts the incident on record. Ask for the report number before you leave, since that number is what the insurer usually needs.
Does my car insurance cover what was stolen?
Usually not. Comprehensive generally covers damage to the car, like the window. Belongings that were taken from the car are typically a renters or homeowners policy matter. Your own policy language is the final word.
Can I clean the glass up before the police come?
Take your photos first and let the police take what they need. After that, cleanup is fine, with shoes and gloves on. Leave the glass inside the door alone, because that gets cleared when the window is replaced.
Do you fix door locks or ignitions damaged in the break-in?
No. We replace auto glass. If a lock, ignition or panel was damaged, that is a separate repair for another shop.
