Cost and insurance
What Affects the Cost of Rear Window Replacement?
There is no single price for a back window, because no two back windows are alike. Here is what moves the number up or down, and how to get a real quote for your vehicle.
The price depends on your exact vehicle, so we quote it from your VIN. The estimate is free.
Ask three people what a rear window costs and you will get three answers, and all of them can be right. A back window on a small sedan is a different part from the back glass on a three-row SUV or a pickup. The size and curve are different, and so is everything built into the glass. That is why a fair number cannot come from the make and model alone. It has to come from your vehicle.
The biggest swing is what is built into the glass. Nearly every rear window carries a defroster grid, those thin lines you see across the pane, and the grid has to match your wiring. Some back glass also has radio antenna lines, a built-in brake light, a rear wiper hole, or a wiper mount. Others are darker from the factory. Each feature changes which part fits your car, and a part with more built in is a different, usually more involved piece of glass than a plain one.
Sensors and trim matter too. Some vehicles have a camera, a rain sensor, or a license plate light tied to the liftgate or trunk area, and the trim around the glass can change what has to come off and go back on. We do not assume. We ask for the VIN, because the VIN tells us which version of the back glass your vehicle left the factory with, down to the option package. If you can text a photo of the damage, that helps us see what we are dealing with.
The glass itself is a choice you get to make. We install OEM glass, OEE glass (original equipment equivalent) and aftermarket glass, so you can pick based on what matters to you. If the one you want is not available for your vehicle, we have a fallback and we tell you before we order anything. The three options are priced differently, so the choice changes your number.
The last piece is who pays. A broken back window is usually a comprehensive claim, and your deductible decides how much of the bill is yours. Georgia is not a state that waives the deductible on glass, so the claim often comes down to your deductible against the quote. We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies, so you can give your insurer our number when you file, or send us the details and we will file the claim for you. When insurance is in play, we tell you your out-of-pocket number before we start.
What we need for an accurate back window quote
- Your VIN, usually on the driver’s side of the dashboard or on the door jamb sticker
- Year, make, model and body style (sedan, hatchback, SUV, wagon)
- Whether the rear window has a defroster grid, wiper, antenna lines or a built-in brake light
- Whether the glass is dark from the factory
- A photo of the damage, texted to us, if you have one
- Your insurance company, if you plan to file a claim
We do not post a fixed price for back glass, because the right number depends on your vehicle, the features in the glass and the glass option you choose. We give a free estimate based on your VIN. If insurance is covering the job, we work out what you would owe before we start. We will not guess at a number over the phone and then change it later.
Questions Drivers Ask
Why can you not just give me a price over the phone?
Because the same model can use more than one back glass. The defroster grid, antenna lines, wiper hole and factory shading all change the part. With your VIN, we know exactly which one fits. With only a make and model, we would be guessing, and a wrong guess costs you more than checking first.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. The estimate for back glass is free and based on your vehicle. You can text us a photo of the damage and your VIN, and we reply within an hour during business hours.
Will insurance cover my back window?
Often, if you carry comprehensive coverage, though you pay your deductible. Georgia does not make insurers waive it on glass. We are a preferred vendor for all major insurance companies, so you can give your insurer our number or have us file for you.
Does OEM glass cost more than aftermarket?
The options are priced differently, and which one costs more depends on the vehicle. We install OEM, OEE and aftermarket glass, so you can see your options on the estimate and choose.
