Does Insurance Cover a Broken Car Window?

A smashed side window or a shattered back window is usually a comprehensive claim. Here is how it works, what you pay, and how break-ins change the picture.

Good to know

Comprehensive coverage usually pays for side and back glass, after your deductible. Georgia does not waive it.

Car insurance is sold in pieces. Liability pays for damage you cause to others. Collision pays for damage from hitting something. Comprehensive pays for most other things: theft, vandalism, hail, a falling branch, an animal strike, and glass breakage. A broken door window, quarter glass or back window falls under comprehensive. If you carry only liability, glass is out of your pocket. If you carry comprehensive, as most financed and leased cars require, the glass is generally covered, subject to your policy.

The deductible is what decides what you actually pay. Comprehensive has its own deductible, and the repair is covered above it. Georgia is not a state that waives the deductible on glass. Some states have laws that force that, and Georgia is not one of them, so do not assume your glass is free. Some insurers write their own glass terms, such as a lower deductible for glass or a waiver for some claims. That is a choice in your policy, not a Georgia rule, so the honest answer is: it depends on your policy, and we help you find out.

Break-ins add a layer. If someone smashed your window to get in, the broken glass is a comprehensive claim, and you will also want a police report, which most insurers expect for a theft or vandalism claim. Take photos of the damage before you clean up. What was stolen from inside the car is a separate question that can fall under a different policy, so ask your insurer how items in the car are handled, and do not assume the auto policy pays for them.

Here is where we help. We are a preferred insurance vendor for all major insurance companies. The simplest way is to open the claim in your insurer’s app, or by phone, and give them our number. We can also file the claim for you if you give us the information. You choose who does the work. If your deductible is higher than the quote, filing does not help, and we say so, so you can just pay us directly and skip the claim. We would rather tell you that than run a claim that costs you.

One more thing before you file: get the quote first. A free estimate from us takes the guessing out. It tells you the cost of replacing the glass on your exact vehicle, so you can compare it with your deductible and decide. We need your VIN, since the glass for one vehicle can have more than one version. Once we replace it, the workmanship is warranted for the life of the vehicle, and we install OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass, so you can choose.

Glass and insurance in Georgia

  • Comprehensive coverage is the part of a policy that usually pays for glass
  • Your comprehensive deductible applies to the claim
  • Georgia is not a zero-deductible glass state
  • Break-ins: take photos and file a police report before cleaning up
  • Ask your insurer separately about items stolen from the car
  • You choose who replaces the glass
What it costs

Replacement pricing depends on your vehicle, so we quote it free from your VIN. If the quote is lower than your deductible, you are better off paying us directly and skipping the claim. If insurance covers the job, we tell you your out-of-pocket number up front, and you can give your insurer our number or have us file for you.

Common questions

Questions Drivers Ask

Does comprehensive cover a smashed window from a break-in?

Usually yes, since theft and vandalism are typically comprehensive claims. You pay your deductible. Take photos and get a police report first.

Will Georgia waive my deductible on glass?

No. Georgia is not a zero-deductible glass state. Some insurers offer glass-specific terms in the policy, so check yours.

Do I have to use the shop my insurer picks?

No. You choose who does the work. Tell your insurer you want Executive Auto Glass, and give them our number.

Will a glass claim raise my rates?

We cannot speak for your insurer. A comprehensive glass claim is generally treated differently than a collision, but ask your insurer how it handles renewals.
