Which window, and can it be fixed?
Can a Car Side Window Be Repaired or Must It Be Replaced?
Windshield chips get filled all the time, so it is fair to ask whether a side window can be fixed the same way. Here is the straight answer and the reason behind it.
Almost always a replacement. Most side glass is tempered, and tempered glass cannot be repaired.
A windshield can be repaired because of how it is built. It is two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them, and a chip usually damages only the outer layer. We can inject resin into that chip and stop it from spreading. Most side windows are built differently. They are a single pane of tempered glass, which is heated and then rapidly cooled so the surface is under compression. That makes it strong, and it also means there is nothing for resin to hold to.
When tempered glass is damaged badly enough, it does not crack in a line the way a windshield does. It breaks all at once into small pieces, which is why side windows seem fine one moment and gone the next. A chip or a crack in a tempered window is a warning, not a stable flaw. It can hold for a while and then let go on a bump, a door slam or a hot day. Because of that, there is no repair for it. It gets replaced.
There are exceptions in how cars are built. Some vehicles, mainly certain higher-end models, use laminated glass in the front doors for noise reduction, and laminated glass chips and cracks instead of shattering. That is the same type of construction as a windshield. Still, a window that moves up and down every day puts extra stress on a damaged pane, and a chip or crack in it tends to spread. Our repair service is for windshields, $85 flat for up to three chips. For side windows, we replace the glass.
So the practical question is not whether it can be repaired but how soon to replace it. A cracked tempered window is fragile. Do not roll it down, because the movement can finish it off and drop the pieces into the door. Cover it if it is open to weather, and get a quote while it is still in one piece. A window that comes out whole is simpler on you than one that has collapsed into the door.
To get a free estimate, text us a photo of the window and your VIN. The VIN tells us the exact glass your vehicle uses, including whether it is laminated or tempered. We install OEM, OEE and aftermarket glass, so you can choose, and we have a fallback when one is not available. We come to your home or workplace.

Questions Drivers Ask
Why can a windshield be repaired but a side window cannot?
A windshield is laminated, two layers with a plastic layer in the middle, so a chip can be filled with resin. A tempered side window is one heat-treated pane. Damage runs through it differently and there is nothing to fill.
Can I keep driving with a cracked side window?
It might hold for a while, but it is a weakened window. Avoid rolling it up and down and avoid slamming the door. Read our page on driving with a broken side window for the details.
What about a small chip in a door window?
A chip in tempered glass is not a repairable chip. It is a flaw in a pane that can fail without warning. The fix is replacement.
Can you tell which type of glass my door window is?
Yes, from the VIN and the stamp on the glass. Look at a lower corner for a small stamp that names the glass type. If you cannot see it, text us a photo and we will help.
