Which window, and can it be fixed?
Which Car Window Is Broken? Door, Quarter or Back Glass
Glass shops use names for car windows that most people never learn. You do not need to know them. This page shows each one so you can tell us what broke in plain words.
You do not need the right word. Tell us where the broken window sits, and send a photo and your VIN.
The windshield is the big one in front, between the hood and the roof. It is made of laminated glass, and it is the one window we can chip-repair. Everything else on this page is a side or back window.
Door glass is the window in a door. A four-door car has four of them: front left, front right, rear left and rear right. Most of these roll up and down. When we talk about door glass replacement, this is what we mean. Describe it from the driver's seat: the driver side is the left, the passenger side is the right. If your rear driver-side door window broke, just say that.
Quarter glass is the small window that does not roll down. On a sedan, it is usually the small piece beside the rear door window or behind it. On an SUV, a wagon or a van, it is often the window set into the body behind the last door, by the back seat or the cargo area. On a coupe, it is the window behind the door. If the broken piece is not in a door and it is not the back window, it is probably quarter glass. We have a page on exactly what it is.
Back glass is the rear window, sometimes called the rear windshield or backlite. On a sedan it is the window behind the trunk lid. On an SUV or a hatchback, it is the glass in the back door or liftgate. On a pickup, it is the window behind the cab, which may be one piece or a sliding unit. Back glass often has thin lines on it for the defroster, which is a heating grid that clears frost and fog.
There is also vent glass, a small, usually triangular piece at the front of an older car's door window. If that is the one that broke, say so, and we tell you straight whether it is a piece we handle. And if you are not sure what to call it, that is fine. Tell us it is the small window behind the back door, or the window the dog looks out of. A photo clears up any confusion in seconds.
To get your estimate, text us a photo of the damage, tell us which side of the car and which part, and send the VIN. The VIN is on the dash at the lower corner of the windshield and on a sticker in the driver door edge. We are fully mobile and come to your home or workplace.
The four main windows, in plain words
- Windshield: the big front window
- Door glass: the windows in the doors, most of which roll down
- Quarter glass: the smaller fixed window behind the rear door or beside the cargo area
- Back glass: the rear window, also called the rear windshield or backlite
We give a free estimate for door, quarter and back glass, and each one prices differently by vehicle. Text a photo, the side and the position, and your VIN, and we work from there. We never quote a price without knowing the vehicle.
Questions Drivers Ask
What is the window behind the back door called?
On most cars that is quarter glass. It is the smaller window set into the body, usually fixed in place.
Is the rear window on an SUV back glass?
Yes. On an SUV, a hatchback or a wagon, the glass in the rear door or liftgate is back glass. We replace it.
What if I do not know which window it is?
Send a photo of the whole side of the car with the broken window visible. Tell us which side and where on the car it sits, and we will tell you what it is.
Where do I find my VIN?
Look at the dash through the windshield at the driver-side corner, or on the sticker on the edge of the driver door. It is a 17-character number. A photo of either is enough.
