Factory Privacy Glass: How Replacement Glass Matches
Your back windows are dark, and you never added anything to them. That is factory privacy glass, and it matters when one of those windows breaks. Here is how matching works.
We match the glass to the version your vehicle came with, using the VIN. This is not tint film, and we do not do tint.
Many SUVs, minivans, pickups and some sedans come from the factory with dark rear windows. That is privacy glass. The darkness is built into the glass itself during manufacturing, instead of a film stuck on afterward. So there is nothing to peel, bubble or fade away from a surface, because the shade is all the way through the pane. If the back side windows and the back glass look darker than the front doors, and the darkness has been there since you bought the vehicle, that is likely what you have.
It is not window tint. Tint is a thin film applied to the inside of the glass, usually after the vehicle is built. We do not do tint, and we do not apply film. We replace glass. When a privacy glass window breaks, the new piece has to be privacy glass too, because a clear replacement would stand out against the others, and a clear pane with film added afterward is a different thing than what your car shipped with.
This is why we ask for your VIN. A vehicle can come with clear glass or privacy glass on the back windows depending on the trim and option package, and the VIN tells us which your vehicle has. One model can have more than one version. With the VIN we can order the glass that matches how your vehicle left the factory, instead of guessing from the model name.
Matching the shade is mostly about the glass option you pick. We install OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) and aftermarket glass, so you can choose, and we have a fallback if the one you want is not available. The darkness of privacy glass can vary a little between makers, so if getting a close match to your other windows matters to you, tell us and we will go over your options before we order.
A few practical things. A privacy glass window is still tempered glass and still breaks into pebbles, so cleanup is the same as for clear glass. The dark glass does not mean a window is stronger or more likely to fail. The defroster grid on the back glass is a separate feature, and a customer review confirms we reconnect the rear defroster connections on back glass jobs. Text us a photo of the window and your VIN, and we reply within an hour during business hours.
Privacy glass versus tint film
- Privacy glass is dark all the way through the pane, made that way at the factory
- Tint film is a layer applied to clear glass after the vehicle is built, and we do not do it
- Your VIN tells us whether your back windows are clear or privacy glass
- Shade can vary a little between glass makers, so ask about your options
The price depends on your vehicle and which window is broken, so we quote from the VIN. The estimate is free. Privacy glass is part of the part we order, not an add-on, and your glass option (OEM, OEE or aftermarket) is part of the number.
Questions Drivers Ask
Is factory privacy glass the same as tint?
No. Privacy glass is dark throughout the glass itself. Tint is a film applied afterward. We replace glass and we do not do tint.
Will the new window match my other dark windows?
We order glass for the version your vehicle came with, using the VIN. The shade can vary slightly between glass makers, so tell us if a close match matters and we go over the options.
Can you put clear glass in and tint it?
We do not do tint, and a clear pane is not what your vehicle came with. We replace privacy glass with privacy glass.
Do dark windows break easier?
No. Privacy glass is tempered like other side and back windows, and it fails the same way, into small pebbles.
