Toyota Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement
Most newer Toyotas carry Toyota Safety Sense, and its camera looks out through your windshield. Here is what Toyota says about that glass, and how we handle a replacement.
On a Toyota with Toyota Safety Sense, a windshield replacement is a camera job too, so the VIN and the dealer both matter.
Toyota calls its driver-assist bundle Toyota Safety Sense, and the owner's manual for Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is a good place to see why the glass matters. It lists the sensors that watch the road ahead: a front radar sensor and a front camera. The camera is mounted on the inner side of the windshield, so everything it sees, it sees through your glass.
Toyota's manual asks a few things of that glass. Keep the windshield clean. Do not stick anything on it in front of the camera, and the manual says that includes transparent stickers. If the inside of the windshield where the camera sits gets dirty, Toyota tells you to contact a dealer rather than wipe it yourself. That tells you how particular the system is about what sits in the camera's view. A toll tag or a dash cam in the wrong spot can cause the same trouble a smudge does.
Then comes the line that matters most to us. Toyota's manual says to replace the windshield if it is damaged or cracked, and that if the windshield has been replaced, recalibration of the front camera will be necessary, with a note to contact your Toyota dealer. We take that at its word. We replace the windshield. We do not calibrate cameras. After the glass goes in, we refer you to the dealer for that step.
Why not do it ourselves? Toyota recommends the dealer for it. The scan tools that third parties use have to reach the vehicle's computer through a back door, and that back door has caused system problems on some vehicles. Dealers do not share their equipment or their access with outside shops. And the makers call for a controlled indoor space for the work, which a mobile truck in your driveway cannot give. We would rather say so plainly than hand you a half answer.
The other half of a good Toyota replacement is the right piece of glass. One vehicle can have up to about 15 windshield versions, depending on the option package. That is why we ask for your VIN when you ask for a free estimate. The VIN tells us which windshield your exact Toyota left the factory with, and we can quote OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) or aftermarket glass from there. If the one you pick is not available, we have a fallback.
We also replace Toyota door glass, quarter glass and back glass. If your back glass has a rear defroster, we reconnect the defroster connections when we replace it.
What Toyota's manual says about the front camera and your glass
- Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 uses a front radar sensor and a front camera to read the road
- The front camera is installed on the inner side of the windshield
- No stickers, including transparent ones, in the area of glass in front of the camera
- Replace the windshield if it is damaged or cracked
- After a windshield replacement, the manual says front camera recalibration will be necessary and to contact your Toyota dealer
Windshield replacement starts with a free estimate, and the price depends on your Toyota, which is why we ask for the VIN. Chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on the same windshield, with mobile service included. If a chip is sitting right in front of the camera, we will tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or the glass should come out.
Questions Drivers Ask
Will my Toyota need its camera recalibrated after a new windshield?
Toyota's owner's manual for Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 says recalibration of the front camera will be necessary after a windshield replacement, and tells you to contact your Toyota dealer. Check your own manual, since systems differ by year. We do not do calibration, so we refer that step to the dealer.
Can I mount a toll tag or dash cam on the windshield?
Not in front of the camera. Toyota's manual says not to attach stickers or other items to the area of glass in front of the front camera. Keep them clear of that spot, and ask us where it sits on your vehicle.
Why do you need my VIN for a Toyota windshield?
Because the same Toyota can leave the factory with different windshields depending on its option package. The VIN tells us which one yours has, so the estimate and the glass both match.
Do you replace the other glass on a Toyota?
Yes: door glass, quarter glass and back glass, all with a free estimate by vehicle. We come to your home or workplace, so there is no shop to visit.
