Honda Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement

Honda Sensing puts a camera behind your rearview mirror, and Honda has clear advice about the glass in front of it. Here is how that shapes a Honda windshield replacement.

Good to know

Honda's own guide is picky about glass in front of the Honda Sensing camera, so we lay out the options and let you choose.

Honda Sensing is Honda's driver-support system. In Honda's reference guide for it, the sensors are a radar sensor in the lower front bumper, a front sensor camera mounted to the interior side of the windshield behind the rearview mirror, and, on some models, sonar sensors in the bumpers. The camera is what reads lane lines and the road ahead, so the glass in front of it is part of the system.

The guide is direct about that glass. It says never to apply a film or attach objects to the windshield that could block the camera's view. It warns that scratches, nicks and other damage within the camera's field of vision can cause the system to act strangely. In that case Honda recommends replacing the windshield with a genuine Honda replacement windshield, and it says that even minor repairs in the camera's field of vision, or an aftermarket replacement windshield, may also cause the system to act strangely.

We want to be honest about what that means for you. Honda recommends genuine Honda glass for these vehicles. We install OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) and aftermarket glass, so you can choose, and if the glass you want is not available, we have a fallback. If you want to follow Honda's advice closely, tell us when you ask for the estimate and we will quote OEM glass for your VIN. The decision is yours, and we will not push you either way.

The same guide covers what happens after the new glass goes in. It says that after replacing the windshield, have a dealer recalibrate the camera, because proper calibration is necessary for the system to work properly. We do not calibrate cameras. We refer that to your Honda dealer. Honda points you to the dealer. The tools outside shops use reach the vehicle's computer through a back door that can cause system issues, and dealers keep their equipment and access to themselves.

A small chip is a case where Honda's guide and our $85 repair meet. If a chip is nowhere near the camera, a repair is often the right call. If it sits in the camera's field of vision, Honda's guide says even a minor repair there may cause trouble, so we will tell you plainly if we think replacement is the safer path. Text us a photo of the chip and we will tell you what we see.

Honda windshields vary by option package, and one vehicle can have up to about 15 versions. That is why the free estimate runs off your VIN. We also replace Honda door, quarter and back glass.

What Honda's Honda Sensing guide says about the glass

  • The front sensor camera is mounted to the interior side of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror
  • Do not apply a film or attach objects that could block the camera's view
  • Damage within the camera's field of vision can make the system act strangely; Honda recommends a genuine Honda replacement windshield
  • Honda says an aftermarket windshield, or even a minor repair in the camera's field of vision, may also cause problems
  • After replacing the windshield, have a dealer recalibrate the camera
What it costs

Replacement starts with a free estimate by VIN, and we can quote OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass so you see the choices. Chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips, mobile service included, as long as the chip is not in the camera's view.

Common questions

Questions Drivers Ask

Does Honda require genuine Honda glass?

Honda's Honda Sensing guide recommends a genuine Honda replacement windshield when glass in the camera's field of vision is damaged, and says an aftermarket windshield may cause the system to act strangely. We install OEM, OEE and aftermarket, so tell us which you want and we will quote it by VIN.

Why does my Honda need a dealer after a windshield replacement?

Honda's guide says to have a dealer recalibrate the camera after replacing the windshield. We do not do calibration, so we send you to the dealer for that step.

What does the Clean Front Windshield message mean?

Honda's guide says if that message appears, park safely and clean the glass. If it stays after you clean and drive for a while, have a dealer check the vehicle.

Should I put a sunshade up on a Honda Sensing car?

Honda's guide says a reflective sunshade should not cover the camera housing, since covering it can trap heat on it. Park out of the sun when you can.
