Hyundai Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement
Hyundai puts a front view camera behind the windshield, and on some models a rain sensor and a head-up display too. Here is what Hyundai's manuals say about that glass.
Hyundai's manual lists damaged glass as something that can cloud the camera's view, so a bad windshield is a system problem too.
Hyundai calls its collision system Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and its owner's manuals describe a version that works from a front view camera alone. They are specific about the glass. When the front windshield where the front view camera is located is covered with foreign material like snow or rain, the manual says the detecting performance drops and the system can limit or switch off. The manual also names a list of conditions that can keep the camera from working well, including a windshield that is filmed or coated, damaged glass, or something sticky on it, like a sticker or a bug.
One of the cautions in the manual is about the sensor itself. It says never to install accessories or stickers on the front windshield, and to keep the front view camera dry. It also says that if the detecting sensor has been replaced or repaired, Hyundai recommends having the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer. We read that as Hyundai pointing you to the dealer for the camera side of things, and that fits how we work.
Here is the split. We replace the windshield and install OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) or aftermarket glass, your choice, with a fallback if your first pick is not available. We do not calibrate cameras. When a Hyundai needs it, we refer you to the Hyundai dealer. Makers recommend the dealer, the tools outside shops use reach the vehicle's computer through a back door that has caused issues, dealers do not share their gear, and the work calls for a controlled indoor space that a mobile job cannot give.
Some Hyundais have glass features beyond the camera. Hyundai's manual describes an optional head-up display, which projects information onto a transparent screen so you can keep your eyes on the road. It also describes a rain sensor on the upper end of the windshield glass that controls the wiper interval, and warns not to touch or wipe that spot with a wet cloth. We will not guess which one your vehicle has. One vehicle can have up to about 15 windshield versions by option package, and the VIN tells us which version yours is.
Hyundai's manual also warns about frost. For snow or ice on the windshield, it says to defrost the glass until the snow or ice is removed, to prevent damage to the wiper and washer system. On a cold Cumming morning that is simply good practice: do not chip at ice on a windshield that already has a chip.
We also replace Hyundai door, quarter and back glass, with a free estimate by vehicle. A chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on the same windshield.
What Hyundai's manuals say about windshield glass
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can work from a front view camera at the windshield
- Snow, rain or foreign material on the windshield over the camera can limit or switch off the system
- Damaged, filmed or coated glass is on the manual's list of things that can cloud the camera lens
- No stickers or accessories on the front windshield
- A rain sensor sits on the upper end of the windshield glass on some models, and the head-up display is optional
The windshield estimate is free and based on your VIN. Chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on one windshield, mobile service included. For more than 3 chips we usually recommend replacement.
Questions Drivers Ask
Can a chipped windshield trigger a Hyundai camera warning?
Hyundai's manual lists damaged glass among the things that can affect the front view camera, so it can. If a chip sits right in front of the camera, send us a photo and we will tell you whether to repair or replace.
Where is the rain sensor on a Hyundai?
On models that have one, Hyundai's manual says it sits on the upper end of the windshield glass and sets the wiper interval. The right glass has to be matched by VIN, which is why we do not quote without it.
Does Hyundai want a dealer inspection after the sensor is replaced?
The manual says if the detecting sensor has been replaced or repaired, Hyundai recommends inspection by an authorized Hyundai dealer. We do not calibrate cameras, so we refer that step to the dealer.
