Mercedes-Benz Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement

Mercedes builds sound control, heat control and a camera into the windshield on many models. A crack in that glass is a bigger decision than a crack in a plain pane.

Good to know

Many Mercedes windshields carry sound-damping or infrared-reflecting layers, so match the glass to the VIN.

Mercedes describes its driver assistance technology as a mix of ultrasonic sensors, radar and cameras. In its own material on the Driver Assistance package and on DRIVE PILOT, Mercedes uses a stereo camera mounted behind the windshield. A stereo camera has two lenses and works out distance the way your eyes do. It looks out through the glass, so the glass in front of it matters.

The glass itself has layers worth knowing about. On the GLC, Mercedes lists an acoustic membrane in the windshield as standard, with acoustically effective thermal insulation glass as an option. On the GLS, the Acoustic Comfort package pairs the windscreen with laminated glass that has an infrared-reflecting film. The names differ by model, but the idea is the same: the windshield is doing a job beyond keeping the bugs out. Replace it with a pane that does not have those layers and you may notice the difference in the cabin.

The head-up display is another reason to be careful. On the GLC, Mercedes says a color head-up display is optional, that a mirror optic places the image on the windscreen, and that its brightness adjusts to outside light. A Mercedes with a display needs a windshield made to carry that image cleanly, or you can end up with a blur or a ghost image. This is a plain case for sending us the VIN first.

Which windshield fits your Mercedes depends on how it was built, and one vehicle can have up to about 15 windshield versions by option package. We read the VIN, find the right version and give you a free estimate. We install OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass, so you can choose, and we have a fallback when the one you want is not available.

If your car needs camera calibration afterward, the dealer does it. We do not calibrate. Makers recommend dealer calibration, third-party tools talk to the vehicle computer through a back door that has caused problems, and the procedure calls for a controlled indoor space that a mobile visit cannot provide. We handle the glass at your home or workplace, and we replace Mercedes door, quarter and back glass as well.

What Mercedes says about its glass and cameras

  • A stereo camera behind the windshield in the Driver Assistance package and DRIVE PILOT.
  • GLC: acoustic membrane in the windshield as standard; thermal insulation glass optional.
  • GLS Acoustic Comfort package: windscreen with infrared-reflecting film.
  • GLC: color head-up display optional, projected onto the windscreen.
What it costs

The estimate is free and starts with your VIN, since price follows the exact windshield version. Chip repair is $85 flat for up to 3 chips on the same windshield, mobile service included. More than 3 chips, we usually recommend replacement.

Common questions

Questions Drivers Ask

Does every Mercedes windshield have the acoustic layer?

No. Mercedes lists it as standard on the GLC and as part of a package on the GLS. Other models and years differ. Your VIN tells us what your car was built with.

Can a head-up display car use any windshield?

It needs a windshield made for it, or the image can blur. We match to the VIN so the display glass is right.

Do you calibrate the stereo camera?

No. If your Mercedes needs calibration after a replacement, the dealer does it.

What if the exact OEM windshield is not available?

We install OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass, and we have a fallback when one is not available. We tell you what each choice means before we start.
