Volvo Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement
Volvo is unusually direct about windshields. Its own support pages say damage in front of the camera usually means a full replacement, and that the camera must be recalibrated afterward.
Volvo itself advises replacing, not repairing, damage in front of the camera, and calling a workshop to recalibrate after.
Volvo's support pages read like a checklist, so here is what they say. On the V60 page, Volvo says that if a crack, scratch or stone chip in the windscreen in front of one of the camera and radar unit windows covers about 0.5 by 3.0 millimeters (0.02 by 0.12 inches) or larger, a workshop must be contacted to replace the windscreen. That is a tiny mark. On the EX90 page Volvo goes further and recommends not repairing small damage in the camera and sensor area at all. Instead, it says the entire windshield should be replaced.
We take that seriously. Our chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips on one windshield, and on most cars it is the right call. On a Volvo, though, if the chip sits in the area in front of the camera, we will tell you Volvo's own guidance points to replacement, and we would rather say so than fill something Volvo advises against. A chip lower on the glass, away from the camera area, is a separate conversation. Send us a photo of the damage and we will tell you which case you have.
The camera matters because of what rides on it. Volvo's XC40 page says Pilot Assist uses the camera and radar unit to measure the distance to the vehicle ahead and to detect lane markings. Volvo's S60 page says that if the windshield is replaced, the camera and radar sensor must be recalibrated by a workshop so all the camera and radar based systems work correctly. That recalibration is the step we hand to the dealer. We do not calibrate. Makers recommend dealer calibration, third-party tools reach the vehicle computer through a back door that has caused system issues, and the job needs a controlled indoor space.
Volvo also says to confirm that the correct windscreen is ordered and fitted before a replacement, and that the same type of wipers, or Volvo-approved wipers, must be fitted. That lines up with how we work. We use your VIN to find the right windshield version, because one vehicle can have up to about 15 versions by option package, and we offer OEM, OEE or aftermarket glass with a fallback if one is unavailable.
We come to your home or workplace, and we also replace Volvo door, quarter and back glass. Estimates are free. If you drive an older Volvo and are not sure what camera it has, tell us the year and VIN and we will sort it from there.
What Volvo says on its own support pages
- V60: damage of about 0.5 x 3.0 mm in front of a camera window means a workshop must replace the windscreen.
- EX90: Volvo recommends not repairing small damage in the camera and sensor area.
- S60: after a windshield replacement, the camera and radar sensor must be recalibrated by a workshop.
- Nothing should be stuck to the glass in front of the camera unit, and it should be kept clean.
The estimate is free and comes from your VIN. A chip repair is $85 flat for up to 3 chips on one windshield, but a chip in front of a Volvo camera may be a replacement by Volvo's own guidance, and we tell you honestly which it is.
Questions Drivers Ask
Can a chip in front of my Volvo camera be repaired?
Volvo advises against it. Its EX90 page recommends replacing the whole windshield for small damage in the camera and sensor area, and its V60 page sets a very small size limit. We follow that guidance.
Does my Volvo need recalibration after a new windshield?
Volvo's S60 page says the camera and radar sensor must be recalibrated by a workshop after a windshield is replaced. We refer that to the dealer. We do not calibrate.
Do the wipers matter on a Volvo windshield job?
Volvo says the same type of wipers, or Volvo-approved wipers, must be fitted during a windshield replacement. We match them to your car.
Do you replace Volvo side and back glass?
Yes. Door glass, quarter glass and back glass are all part of what we do, with a free estimate by vehicle.
