Buick Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement

Buick's manual says a replacement windshield on a camera-equipped Buick must be installed to GM specifications. Here is what that means for you.

Good to know

On a Buick with a front camera sensor, the windshield has to be installed to GM specifications, in GM's own words.

The Buick Encore GX owner's manual keeps its windshield advice to a short paragraph, and it says a lot. When a windshield replacement is needed and the vehicle has a front-looking camera sensor for the driver assistance systems, the windshield must be installed according to GM specifications for these systems to work properly. If it is not, the manual says, there may be unexpected behavior and messages from these systems.

Where is that camera? Buick's manual describes the camera sensor on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, and says it can be blocked by snow, ice, dirt, mud or debris and needs to be cleaned for adaptive cruise control to work. It also says not to install or place any object around the front camera windshield area that would obstruct the camera's view, with a roof-mounted canoe or kayak given as an example of something that can overhang the camera.

This is the part where we are careful with our words. Buick says to install the windshield to GM specifications. We replace the windshield and we choose with you among OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) and aftermarket glass, quoted by VIN, with a fallback if one is not available. We do not calibrate cameras, and if your Buick needs that after the glass, we refer you to the Buick dealer. GM's dealers have the maker's equipment and access, the outside tools used by shops reach the vehicle's computer through a back door that has caused problems, and the maker's work calls for a controlled indoor space.

Buicks come in different packages, so the VIN matters even for something as plain as a windshield. One vehicle can have up to about 15 versions, and the version with a camera bracket is not the version without one. That is why every estimate starts with the VIN. A free estimate costs you nothing and keeps us from putting the wrong pane in.

Buick owners tend to keep their cars a long time, and glass wears. A chip that has sat for a year can turn into a crack on a cold morning. A flat $85 repair covers up to 3 chips on the same windshield, with mobile service included. We also replace Buick door, quarter and back glass, with a free estimate by vehicle.
