GMC Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement
A GMC Sierra windshield can be part of the head-up display and sit in front of a camera. GM's own manual spells out what it wants from a replacement.
GM tells owners to match a replacement windshield to the truck, and we think that is the right way to do it.
We read the 2024 GMC Sierra and Sierra Denali 1500 owner's manual for this page. The windshield replacement section is short and worth knowing. It has two parts, one for the head-up display and one for the driver assistance systems, and both are about getting the glass right.
The HUD part says the windshield is part of the HUD system. If the windshield must be replaced, the manual says to get one that is designed for HUD, or the HUD image may look out of focus. That is easy to picture. The display projects onto the glass, so the glass has to be made for it. Ask your dealer or us which windshield your Sierra has. We read it off your VIN, and we can quote OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) or aftermarket glass, with a fallback if your first pick is not available.
The driver assistance part is about the camera. GM's manual says if the windshield needs to be replaced and the vehicle has a front camera sensor for the driver assistance systems, a GM replacement windshield is recommended, installed according to GM specifications for proper alignment. If it is not, the systems may not work properly, may show messages, or may not work at all. The manual closes by telling you to see your dealer for proper windshield replacement. Elsewhere it describes the camera sensor on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, which needs to be kept clear of snow, ice, dirt, mud or debris for adaptive cruise control to work.
That is where we are honest about our limits. We replace the windshield. We do not calibrate cameras. On a GMC that needs it, we refer you to the GMC dealer. The reasons are the ones we give everywhere: makers recommend the dealer, the outside tools reach the vehicle's computer through a back door that has caused system problems, dealers keep their equipment and access to themselves, and the work needs a controlled indoor space that a driveway visit cannot give.
GMC trucks and SUVs work hard, and ours do too: we do fleet and dealership glass in addition to regular customers. A single GMC can have up to about 15 windshield versions by option package, so every estimate starts with the VIN. We also replace GMC door, quarter and back glass, and on trucks with a rear defroster we reconnect the defroster connections. A chip repair is a flat $85 for up to 3 chips, mobile service included.

Questions Drivers Ask
Will a blurry head-up display be fixed by a new windshield?
If the display looks out of focus after a replacement, GM's manual says the replacement windshield may not be one designed for HUD. We match HUD glass by VIN so that does not happen.
Does GM say I need GM glass?
For vehicles with a front camera sensor, GM's manual recommends a GM replacement windshield installed to GM specifications. We install OEM, OEE and aftermarket, and we will quote what you choose.
Do you do GMC fleet vehicles?
Yes. We do fleet and dealership work as well as individual vehicles.
