Chevrolet Windshield and Auto Glass Replacement
Chevrolet trucks like the Silverado can have a head-up display and a front camera, and both depend on the right windshield. Here is what GM's own manual says, and what we do about it.
On a Chevrolet with a head-up display or a front camera, the windshield has to be the right one, not just one that fits.
We read the owner's manual for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and it is a useful look at how GM treats windshield glass. Two things stand out. Some Silverados have a head-up display, and some have a camera on the windshield that feeds the driver-assist systems. Each one puts a requirement on the glass.
Take the head-up display first. GM's manual says that if the truck has one, the windshield is part of the HUD system. If the windshield must be replaced, get one that is designed for HUD, or the HUD image may look out of focus. That is a plain, mechanical reason to match the glass to the truck, and it is one more reason we ask for the VIN. A windshield that fits the opening but is not built for HUD will give you a blurry readout.
Now the camera. The manual describes a camera sensor on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, which can be blocked by snow, ice, dirt, mud or debris, and says the area needs to be clean for adaptive cruise control to work. On replacement, GM's manual says that if the vehicle has a front camera sensor for the driver assistance systems, a GM replacement windshield is recommended, and that it must be installed according to GM specifications for proper alignment, or the systems may not work properly, may show messages, or may not work at all. It ends by telling you to see your dealer for proper windshield replacement.
We want to be straight about where we fit. We replace the windshield and we can quote OEM, OEE (original equipment equivalent) or aftermarket glass, so you choose with the facts in front of you. GM recommends its own glass, and we will not hide that. If the one you pick is unavailable, we have a fallback. We do not calibrate cameras, and when a Chevrolet needs it we refer you to the dealer. Dealers have the maker's equipment and access, makers want a controlled indoor space, and the shortcuts third parties use have caused system issues.
A single Chevrolet can have up to about 15 windshield versions. A free VIN estimate is how we sort which one is yours. We also replace Chevrolet door glass, quarter glass and back glass, and on a pickup with a rear defroster we reconnect the defroster connections.
